iMovie '11: Add Photographs
You can bring your pictures into iMovie in two ways:
To add visual effects to individual pictures, hover over the image with the mouse and select the blue cogwheel icon. In the drop down menu, choose Cropping, Ken Burns, & Rotation. Adjustment options will appear in the viewer.

Set picture import settings
The Ken Burns effect is often turned on in iMovie by default and is applied to every picture imported into a project. If you don't want this effect applied to every picture in your project, you can deselect it in the project settings. You can also change the default duration of your photos.
To change the default picture import settings, go to File > Project Properties
To change the duration, colour etc of an individual picture open the Inspector Window for the specific clip.

- Set Initial Photo Placement and Initial Video Placement to “Crop”.
- Set the default duration of each photo to “5.0s” and “Applies to all photos”.
