iMovie '11: Import Video
To create movies in iMovie, you must first import (transfer) your video footage from your camera to your computer. When you import video, iMovie stores it as an Event in the Event Library. This is the footage you use to create movie projects in iMovie.

Importing from Tape-based camera
To import from a Tape-based Camera connect the camera to your iMac via FireWire and switch it to playback mode. iMovie will detect it and launch the Import Window. You can either Import the whole tape (Automatic) or start and stop the import to select parts (Manual). In the latter you can control the tape playback using the controls in the Import Window. For a more detailed guide go to the Apple Support Website.

To add a file already on your Mac to a project (eg. downloaded from the internet), select File > Import > Movies. You can leave the file where you found it, or move it into the Event's folder in Finder.
